Mobile Accessories

Choosing Mobile Accessories in Kenya

Mobile accessories include the products used to charge, protect, connect and improve smartphones, tablets and other portable devices.

Common mobile phone accessories include:

  • Wall chargers
  • Charging cables
  • Power banks
  • Wireless chargers
  • Car chargers
  • Earphones and earbuds
  • Headphones
  • Phone cases
  • Screen protectors
  • Phone holders and car mounts
  • Memory cards
  • Smartwatches
  • Selfie sticks and tripods

The right accessory depends on your phone model, charging requirements and intended use. A cable or charger may physically connect to a device but still fail to provide the expected charging speed if it does not support the correct charging protocol.

When comparing mobile accessories in Kenya, check:

  • Device compatibility
  • Connector type
  • Power output
  • Charging protocol
  • Cable length
  • Data-transfer support
  • Wireless standard
  • Build quality
  • Included cable or adapter
  • Phone-model compatibility
  • Product condition
  • Warranty
  • Brand and exact model number

Avoid choosing accessories based only on appearance or a low price. Poorly matched chargers, cables, batteries and adapters may charge slowly, disconnect frequently or fail to support features available on the phone.

Phone Chargers and Fast-Charging Adapters

Phone chargers are available with different power outputs and port configurations.

Common options include:

  • USB-A chargers
  • USB-C chargers
  • Single-port adapters
  • Dual-port chargers
  • Multi-port charging stations
  • GaN chargers
  • Car chargers
  • Wireless charging pads

Entry-level chargers may provide approximately 10W to 20W, while more capable USB-C Power Delivery chargers can provide 25W, 30W, 45W, 65W or more.

Higher wattage does not automatically make a charger suitable for every device. The phone, charger and cable must support compatible charging standards.

Common fast-charging standards include:

  • USB Power Delivery
  • Qualcomm Quick Charge
  • Samsung Super Fast Charging
  • Apple USB-C charging
  • Proprietary charging systems used by some smartphone brands

For example, a 65W charger may safely work with a lower-powered phone when proper USB-C Power Delivery negotiation is supported. However, the phone will normally draw only the amount of power it can accept.

Confirm whether the charger package includes a cable. Some adapters are sold separately.

Charging Cables

The connector at each end of a charging cable must match the charger and device.

Common cable types include:

  • USB-A to USB-C
  • USB-C to USB-C
  • USB-C to Lightning
  • USB-A to Lightning
  • USB-A to Micro-USB
  • Multi-connector cables

A cable’s wattage rating matters when charging phones, tablets and laptops. A basic cable may work for ordinary phone charging but fail to support 60W, 100W, 140W or 240W USB-C charging.

When choosing a charging cable, check:

  • Connector type
  • Maximum supported wattage
  • Cable length
  • Charging-only or charging-and-data functionality
  • Data-transfer speed
  • Braided or silicone construction
  • Reinforced connector joints
  • USB Power Delivery support
  • E-marker support for high-wattage USB-C charging

Current Kenyan listings range from basic Oraimo cables priced at approximately KSh 150–KSh 600 to specialised 60W and 100W cables costing roughly KSh 1,250–KSh 2,200.

Power Banks

Power banks provide portable battery power when a wall socket is unavailable.

The main specifications to compare are:

  • Battery capacity
  • Maximum output
  • USB-C input and output
  • Number of charging ports
  • Built-in cables
  • Fast-charging support
  • Wireless charging
  • Digital battery display
  • Weight and dimensions
  • Airline suitability

A 10,000mAh power bank is generally easier to carry and may be suitable for everyday phone use. A 20,000mAh model provides more reserve power but is usually heavier.

Power banks rated at 27,000mAh or more may be suitable for extended travel or repeated charging. High-output models with 65W, 100W or 140W USB-C charging may also support compatible laptops.

The advertised battery capacity is not the exact amount delivered to the phone. Energy is lost through voltage conversion, cable resistance, heat and charging inefficiency.

Earbuds, Earphones and Headphones

Audio accessories include:

  • Wired earphones
  • Wireless neckband earphones
  • True wireless earbuds
  • Over-ear Bluetooth headphones
  • Open-ear headphones
  • Gaming headsets

When comparing wireless earbuds, check:

  • Bluetooth version
  • Battery life
  • Charging-case capacity
  • Microphone quality
  • Environmental noise cancellation
  • Active noise cancellation
  • Water-resistance rating
  • Supported audio codecs
  • Multipoint connectivity
  • App support
  • Low-latency or gaming mode

Environmental noise cancellation is mainly intended to improve microphone clarity during calls. It should not be confused with active noise cancellation, which reduces outside sound heard by the listener.

Battery-life claims also vary according to volume, calling, active noise cancellation and other enabled features.

Phone Cases and Screen Protectors

Phone cases and screen protectors must match the exact device model.

A case intended for a similarly named phone may block cameras, buttons, microphones, speakers or charging ports if the dimensions differ.

Common case types include:

  • Flexible TPU cases
  • Silicone cases
  • Hard-shell cases
  • Rugged protective cases
  • Clear cases
  • Wallet cases
  • MagSafe-compatible cases
  • Cases with built-in stands

Screen-protection options include tempered glass and flexible film. Tempered glass generally offers stronger impact and scratch protection, while flexible films may fit curved displays more easily.

Before buying, confirm:

  • Exact phone model
  • Screen size
  • Camera layout
  • Fingerprint-reader location
  • Curved or flat display
  • Case compatibility
  • Edge-to-edge coverage
  • Installation kit availability

A protector made for a different regional or generational model may not align correctly even when the phones have similar names.

Wireless Chargers

Wireless charging pads and magnetic wireless chargers reduce the need to connect a cable directly to the phone.

Check:

  • Phone wireless-charging support
  • Qi compatibility
  • Maximum wireless output
  • Magnetic-alignment support
  • Required wall-adapter output
  • Case compatibility
  • Included charging cable
  • Heat-management features

A wireless charger advertised at 15W may deliver a lower rate to phones that support only 5W, 7.5W or 10W wireless charging.

The charging pad may also require a compatible fast-charging adapter that is not included in the box.

Oraimo currently lists its 15W PowerDock wireless charging pad at approximately KSh 1,500, while more advanced foldable and multi-device wireless chargers listed by Kenyan retailers can cost around KSh 4,000–KSh 9,000.

Car Chargers and Phone Mounts

Car chargers allow users to charge phones while travelling. They may connect through the vehicle’s 12V accessory socket and provide USB-A, USB-C or both.

Compare:

  • Total output
  • Per-port output
  • USB Power Delivery
  • Quick Charge support
  • Number of ports
  • Cable inclusion
  • Vehicle voltage compatibility

Phone mounts may use:

  • Suction cups
  • Dashboard adhesive
  • Air-vent clips
  • Magnetic attachment
  • Gravity grips
  • Mechanical clamps

Choose a mount that keeps the phone visible without obstructing the driver’s view. Confirm that it can hold the phone securely when used with its case.

Current public Kenyan listings show basic cables starting from around KSh 150–KSh 300. Standard branded fast-charging adapters commonly begin at around KSh 700–KSh 1,500, while premium multi-port and high-output GaN chargers may cost KSh 6,500–KSh 14,000 or more.

Wireless audio products vary more widely. Basic generic earbuds may be available below KSh 1,000, while branded earbuds and headphones commonly cost between approximately KSh 1,500 and KSh 5,000. Advanced models with active noise cancellation may cost substantially more.

The lowest-priced listing is not always the best comparison. Verify the brand, model, charging specification and seller before ordering, particularly for products advertised with unusually high battery capacities or power ratings.

Choosing Compatible Mobile Accessories

Before ordering a mobile accessory, identify:

  1. The exact phone or tablet model.
  2. The connector used by the device.
  3. The maximum charging speed supported.
  4. Whether the device supports USB Power Delivery, Quick Charge or a proprietary standard.
  5. Whether a cable or adapter is included.
  6. The required cable wattage.
  7. Whether wireless or magnetic charging is supported.
  8. Whether the product is new and covered by a warranty.

For Apple devices, check whether the phone uses Lightning or USB-C. Newer iPhone generations use USB-C, while many earlier models use Lightning.

For Android phones, do not assume that every USB-C charger delivers the manufacturer’s maximum advertised charging rate. Some fast-charging systems require a compatible proprietary charger and cable.

Browse the available mobile accessories above to compare chargers, cables, power banks, audio products, phone protection and other accessories by compatibility, specifications and price.
