5G Phones

Choosing a 5G Phone in Kenya

A 5G phone supports fifth-generation mobile networks, which can provide faster downloads, lower latency and improved network capacity where compatible 5G coverage is available.

A 5G phone can still connect to 4G and older supported networks. However, owning a 5G phone does not guarantee that every connection will use 5G.

Actual network performance depends on:

• Mobile-network operator
• 5G coverage in your area
• Supported frequency bands
• SIM card
• Data plan
• Network congestion
• Building materials
• Distance from the network site
• Phone software and settings

When comparing 5G phones in Kenya, check:

• Supported 5G bands
• Kenyan network compatibility
• Processor and modem
• Physical RAM
• Internal storage
• Screen size and resolution
• Display refresh rate
• Main and selfie cameras
• Battery capacity
• Charging speed
• Dual-SIM configuration
• eSIM support where relevant
• Android or iOS version
• Software-support period
• Water and dust resistance
• Warranty
• New or previously owned condition

Do not assume that two versions of the same model both support 5G. Many manufacturers sell separate 4G and 5G variants with similar names but different processors and specifications.

Who Should Buy a 5G Phone?

A 5G phone may be useful for customers who:

• Live or work in an area with 5G coverage
• Download large files
• Stream high-resolution video
• Use cloud-storage services
• Make frequent video calls
• Use the phone as a hotspot
• Play latency-sensitive online games
• Plan to keep the phone for several years
• Need faster connectivity for business applications

Customers who mainly use calls, WhatsApp, M-PESA and light web browsing may not notice a major difference between a capable 4G phone and an entry-level 5G phone.

Affordable 5G Phones

Affordable 5G phones have become more common across brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, Infinix, OPPO, OnePlus and ZTE.

They commonly provide:

• 4GB to 8GB RAM
• 128GB or 256GB storage
• Full HD or HD+ displays
• 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rates
• 5,000mAh-class batteries
• Dual-SIM connectivity
• Mid-range 5G processors

Some affordable 5G phones reduce costs by using basic cameras, slower storage, lower-resolution displays or limited software support. Compare the complete specification rather than buying based only on the 5G label.

Mid-Range 5G Phones

Mid-range 5G devices typically provide a stronger balance of performance, camera quality, battery life and display technology.

Features may include:

• AMOLED displays
• Full HD+ resolution
• 120Hz refresh rate
• 6GB to 12GB RAM
• 128GB to 512GB storage
• Optical image stabilisation
• Faster charging
• Better stereo speakers
• Improved water resistance
• Longer software support

These phones are suitable for everyday productivity, social-media content, moderate gaming and long-term use.

Premium 5G Phones

Premium 5G phones may offer:

• Flagship processors
• LTPO AMOLED or OLED displays
• Advanced camera systems
• Telephoto and ultrawide lenses
• 4K or higher-resolution video
• Wireless charging
• IP68 water resistance
• Longer software support
• Desktop or AI productivity features
• Foldable designs

Samsung’s current premium range includes Galaxy S and Galaxy Z devices, while brands such as Xiaomi, OnePlus and OPPO also sell flagship 5G smartphones. Samsung’s current catalogue, for example, includes the Galaxy S26 range alongside its broader Galaxy smartphone portfolio.

5G Phone Batteries

5G connectivity can increase power consumption, particularly where signal strength is weak or the phone repeatedly switches between 4G and 5G.

When comparing battery performance, check:

• Battery capacity
• Processor efficiency
• Display resolution
• Refresh rate
• Charging wattage
• Wireless-charging support
• Battery-protection features

A large battery does not always mean better battery life. Software optimisation, processor efficiency and display settings also matter.
