HMD Phones

Choosing an HMD Phone in Kenya

HMD phones include Android smartphones and feature phones designed for different budgets and everyday communication needs.

The HMD smartphone range covers affordable models such as the HMD Arc, Aura and Pulse series, mid-range devices such as the HMD Fusion, and more advanced models such as the HMD Skyline. HMD also produces simple feature phones intended mainly for calls, text messages, music and long battery life.

When comparing HMD phones in Kenya, check:

  • Smartphone or feature-phone design
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Internal storage
  • Memory-card support
  • Screen size
  • Display resolution
  • Refresh rate
  • Rear and front cameras
  • Battery capacity
  • Charging speed
  • 4G or 5G connectivity
  • Dual-SIM support
  • NFC availability
  • Operating system
  • Software-update policy
  • Repairability
  • Water and dust resistance
  • Colour
  • Warranty
  • Official Kenya model or imported variant

The right HMD phone depends on how you intend to use it. An entry-level model may be sufficient for calls, messaging, social media and light browsing, while photography, multitasking, gaming and heavier applications generally require more RAM, faster processing and additional storage.

HMD’s official Kenya range includes models such as the HMD Aura, Pulse, Pulse+, Pulse Pro, Fusion and Skyline. Availability varies between models, colours and memory configurations.

HMD Budget Phones

Budget HMD smartphones are suitable for users who need essential Android features without paying for premium hardware.

Models such as the HMD Arc, HMD Aura and HMD Pulse are generally intended for:

  • Calls and text messages
  • WhatsApp and other messaging applications
  • Social media
  • Mobile-money applications
  • Email
  • Basic web browsing
  • Video streaming at moderate quality
  • Light photography
  • School and everyday communication

When comparing affordable HMD phones, pay particular attention to RAM and storage. A phone with 4GB RAM will generally handle modern applications and multitasking more comfortably than a model with 2GB RAM.

Internal storage can fill quickly once applications, photographs, videos and WhatsApp media are added. A 64GB phone may be adequate for basic use, but buyers who store substantial media should consider 128GB or confirm that the phone supports a microSD card.

The HMD Aura available through HMD Kenya uses a 4GB RAM and 64GB storage configuration and runs Android 13.

HMD Pulse, Pulse+ and Pulse Pro

The HMD Pulse family offers several levels of performance within HMD’s affordable smartphone range.

The standard HMD Pulse is designed for everyday communication and light application use. It features a 6.65-inch display, a 90Hz refresh rate, a 5,000mAh battery and a Unisoc T606 processor. Its repair-focused construction is intended to make selected components easier to replace than on many sealed smartphones.

The HMD Pulse+ provides additional camera and storage options, depending on the exact configuration. It may be more suitable for users who take more photographs or need additional internal storage.

The HMD Pulse Pro is the more advanced option in the range. It is aimed at buyers who want improved cameras, more memory and stronger everyday performance without moving into a substantially higher price bracket.

Before ordering any Pulse model, confirm:

  • Exact RAM
  • Exact storage
  • Front-camera resolution
  • Rear-camera configuration
  • NFC support
  • Charger inclusion
  • Available colour
  • Regional software version

Different Kenyan retailers may carry different configurations of the same Pulse model.

HMD Fusion Phones

The HMD Fusion is a modular-style smartphone built around replaceable components and optional accessories known as Smart Outfits.

Depending on the accessory, a Smart Outfit may add functionality or change the appearance of the device. Accessory availability is separate from phone availability, so buyers should not assume that every outfit is included with the handset.

The Fusion is suitable for:

  • Everyday work and communication
  • Social-media use
  • Photography
  • Video streaming
  • Moderate multitasking
  • Users interested in repairability
  • Buyers who want optional modular accessories

The Fusion uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor and is sold in configurations offering up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. A Kenyan retailer currently references a price of approximately KSh 35,000, although the model was marked out of stock when checked.

Confirm whether the listed package includes any Smart Outfit, charger, case or additional accessory. These should not be assumed to be part of the standard box.

HMD Skyline Phones

The HMD Skyline is positioned above HMD’s entry-level and mainstream models.

It is better suited to users who prioritise:

  • A higher-quality display
  • More powerful processing
  • Higher-resolution cameras
  • Larger RAM and storage options
  • Faster charging
  • 5G connectivity
  • Premium construction
  • Easier repair of selected components

Memory configurations may include 8GB RAM with 128GB storage or 12GB RAM with 256GB storage. These configurations should be treated as separate products because they can differ considerably in price.

The Skyline may suit business users, content creators and buyers who want a more capable daily phone. It should not automatically be classified as a gaming phone, however. Buyers interested in demanding mobile games should compare its processor, sustained performance, heat management and display characteristics with dedicated gaming-oriented alternatives.

A Kenyan retailer listed the HMD Skyline at approximately KSh 29,500 when checked, although prices vary significantly according to the memory configuration, source and warranty.

HMD 4G and 5G Phones

Most affordable HMD smartphones use 4G connectivity, which is sufficient for common activities such as:

  • WhatsApp
  • Email
  • Web browsing
  • YouTube and other streaming services
  • Social media
  • Mobile banking
  • Mobile-money applications
  • Navigation

Selected models, including the HMD Fusion, Skyline, Crest and Crest Max, offer 5G support in some markets.

Before purchasing an imported 5G HMD phone, confirm that its supported network bands are compatible with the intended Kenyan mobile network. A phone being advertised as “5G” does not guarantee that every regional variant supports every band used locally.

Also confirm whether the phone has:

  • One physical SIM and an eSIM
  • Two physical SIM slots
  • A shared SIM and memory-card slot
  • Carrier restrictions

The exact arrangement can vary by model and regional version.

HMD Feature Phones

HMD feature phones are intended primarily for straightforward communication rather than smartphone applications.

They may be suitable for:

  • Calls and SMS
  • A secondary or emergency phone
  • Older users who prefer physical buttons
  • Field workers
  • Delivery and transport staff
  • Users who need longer standby time
  • Environments where a basic phone is preferable
  • Music and FM-radio listening

Models such as the HMD 105 4G and HMD 130 Music focus on basic communication, physical keypads and simple entertainment features.

Feature phones should not be treated as substitutes for Android smartphones. They may not support WhatsApp, modern banking applications, app-store downloads or advanced web browsing.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • 2G or 4G network support
  • VoLTE compatibility
  • Dual-SIM support
  • Camera availability
  • Bluetooth
  • FM radio
  • MP3 playback
  • Memory-card support
  • USB charging connection
  • Whether a charger is included

HMD Phone Cameras

Camera performance depends on more than the megapixel figure.

When comparing HMD phone cameras, consider:

  • Main-sensor resolution
  • Autofocus
  • Low-light performance
  • Image processing
  • Front-camera resolution
  • Video resolution
  • Stabilisation
  • Portrait mode
  • Night mode
  • Available storage

A 50MP camera does not automatically produce better photographs than every lower-resolution camera. Sensor size, lens quality, autofocus and image processing also affect the final result.

Entry-level HMD models are generally suitable for casual daylight photography, document scanning and video calls. Buyers who regularly photograph products, events or social-media content should consider models with stronger camera systems and larger storage capacities.

HMD Phone Repairability

Repairability is a significant part of HMD’s positioning for several smartphone models.

Selected phones are designed to make common repairs, such as replacing a cracked display, charging port, back cover or battery, more accessible. However, repairability does not mean that every repair should be attempted without suitable tools or technical knowledge.

Before choosing a repairable phone, confirm:

  • Which components are replaceable
  • Whether spare parts are available in Kenya
  • Cost of replacement parts
  • Availability of authorised repair support
  • Whether self-repair affects the warranty
  • Tools required
  • Repair instructions for the exact model

A repair-friendly design can potentially extend the useful life of a phone, but only when compatible parts and competent repair services are available.

Android Versions and Software Updates

HMD smartphones use Android, but the installed version and update commitment vary by model.

Before buying, check:

  • Android version installed
  • Number of promised operating-system upgrades
  • Security-update period
  • Frequency of security updates
  • Whether the device uses Android Go
  • Whether the model is still within its update-support period

Android Go is designed for lower-powered phones with limited memory. It can provide a lighter experience, but some features and application performance may differ from a standard Android installation.

Do not assume that every HMD phone receives the same number of Android upgrades. Verify the update policy for the exact model rather than relying on a general brand promise.
