Choosing Power and Electrical Products in Kenya

Power and electrical products help distribute electricity, charge devices, protect electronics and maintain operation during power interruptions.

This category includes power extensions, surge protectors, smart power strips, voltage protectors, chargers, adapters, power banks and backup power products. The correct product depends on the equipment being powered, its electrical requirements and the type of protection or backup needed.

Power extensions increase the number of devices that can connect to one wall socket. Some models also include USB-A or USB-C charging ports.

Surge protectors help reduce the risk of damage from short-duration voltage spikes. They should not be confused with voltage protectors, stabilizers or uninterruptible power supplies.

Voltage protectors are commonly used with televisions, refrigerators, freezers and other appliances. They may disconnect the connected equipment when the incoming voltage rises above or falls below a safe range.

A UPS provides temporary battery power during an outage. It is suitable for equipment such as desktop computers, routers, network devices, CCTV systems and point-of-sale equipment, depending on its capacity.

When comparing power and electrical products in Kenya, check:

  • Product type and intended use
  • Input and output voltage
  • Maximum wattage and current
  • Plug and socket type
  • Number of sockets or charging ports
  • Cable length
  • Surge and overload protection
  • USB-A and USB-C charging output
  • Battery capacity for backup products
  • UPS power rating in VA and watts
  • Compatibility with the connected equipment
  • Product condition
  • Warranty
  • Manufacturer and safety certification

Kenyan wall sockets generally use the British Type G plug. Confirm the plug type before ordering, particularly when buying imported chargers, adapters or power strips.

Do not connect equipment whose combined power consumption exceeds the stated capacity of an extension, surge protector, inverter or UPS. High-power appliances such as kettles, heaters, irons, cookers and some printers may require a dedicated wall socket.
