Interactive Displays

Choosing an Interactive Display in Kenya

Interactive displays are large touch-enabled screens designed for digital writing, presentations, teaching and group collaboration.

They are also called interactive flat-panel displays, interactive screens or smart boards. Unlike traditional projector-based interactive whiteboards, modern interactive displays combine the screen, touch surface, speakers and computing functions in one unit.

Interactive displays are used in:

  • Schools and universities
  • Training centres
  • Boardrooms
  • Conference rooms
  • Government offices
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Control rooms
  • Hybrid meeting spaces

Users can write on the display, annotate documents, move on-screen objects, present lessons, share content and collaborate with connected devices.

Interactive Display Screen Sizes

Common interactive-display sizes include 55, 65, 75, 85 and 86 inches.

A 55-inch display is suitable for small meeting rooms, huddle spaces and compact training rooms.

A 65-inch display works well in standard classrooms, meeting rooms and offices where viewers are relatively close to the screen.

A 75-inch display improves visibility in larger classrooms and conference rooms.

An 85-inch or 86-inch display is better suited to lecture rooms, large boardrooms, halls and spaces where viewers sit farther away.

The largest screen is not automatically the best choice. Room dimensions, viewing distance, wall strength and installation height should all be considered.

Touch and Writing Performance

Interactive displays can support multiple simultaneous touch points. Depending on the model, this may allow several users to write or interact with the screen at the same time.

When comparing touch performance, check:

  • Number of supported touch points
  • Writing latency
  • Touch accuracy
  • Palm rejection
  • Stylus support
  • Pen thickness recognition
  • Annotation tools
  • Multi-user writing support

A high touch-point figure is less important than consistent accuracy and low writing delay during normal use.

Built-In Android System

Many interactive displays include an Android operating system for whiteboarding, presentations, file access and wireless content sharing.

When comparing built-in systems, check:

  • Android version
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Internal storage
  • Available applications
  • Security-update support
  • User-profile management
  • Device-management features

Some displays provide basic hardware intended mainly for whiteboarding and presentations. More powerful models can run several applications and handle more complex content.

OPS Computers and Windows Support

An OPS computer is a removable computer module installed inside a compatible interactive display.

It can add Windows, Microsoft Office and desktop software without requiring a separate laptop or desktop computer.

Before buying, establish whether:

  • An OPS computer is included
  • The OPS slot is compatible with the required module
  • Windows is licensed
  • The processor, RAM and storage meet the intended workload

OPS modules, wireless dongles, cameras and mobile stands are frequently sold separately.

Connectivity

Useful interactive-display connections may include:

  • HDMI
  • DisplayPort
  • USB-A
  • USB-B touch input
  • USB-C
  • Ethernet
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • Audio input and output
  • RS-232 control

USB-C can simplify laptop connection by carrying video, touch data and sometimes power through one cable. Check the exact model because USB-C capabilities differ.

Interactive Displays for Education

Schools should consider:

  • Anti-glare screen treatment
  • Easy-to-use whiteboard software
  • Multi-touch capability
  • Writing accuracy
  • Wireless screen sharing
  • Classroom device management
  • Compatibility with learning platforms
  • Speaker quality
  • User training
  • Local technical support

Interactive displays can replace a projector and conventional whiteboard in many classrooms, but the institution should budget for installation, teacher training and ongoing support.

Interactive Displays for Business

Businesses should consider:

  • Wireless presentation support
  • Video-conferencing compatibility
  • Built-in camera and microphones
  • Split-screen functionality
  • Remote participant annotation
  • Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Google Meet compatibility
  • USB-C laptop connectivity
  • Central device management
  • Wall mounting or mobile trolley installation

A built-in camera should not be assumed. Many models require a separate video-conferencing camera or collaboration bar.
