Phone Chargers

Choosing a Phone Charger in Kenya

Phone chargers supply power to smartphones, tablets, wireless earbuds, smartwatches, power banks, and other portable devices. They range from basic USB adapters intended for overnight charging to compact GaN chargers capable of fast-charging several devices from one wall socket.

Modern phones do not always include a charger in the box. Buyers may therefore need to purchase a compatible wall adapter separately or replace an older charger that cannot provide the charging speed supported by their device.

When comparing phone chargers in Kenya, check:

  • Maximum charging output
  • USB-A or USB-C ports
  • Number of charging ports
  • Supported fast-charging protocols
  • Device compatibility
  • Included charging cable
  • Plug type
  • Input-voltage range
  • Charger size and portability
  • GaN technology
  • Brand and model number
  • Warranty
  • Safety and temperature-control features

The wattage printed on a charger represents its maximum possible output. The connected phone determines how much power it can safely accept, so using a 65W charger does not automatically make a phone charge at 65W.

For example, a phone designed for 25W charging will normally draw only the amount of power it supports, even when connected to a compatible 45W or 65W USB-C charger.

USB-C and USB-A Phone Chargers

USB-C is now the main charging connection used on newer smartphones, tablets, and many accessories. A USB-C power adapter can support higher output levels and more flexible charging standards than many older USB-A chargers.

USB-A chargers remain useful for:

  • Older charging cables
  • Micro-USB devices
  • Entry-level phones
  • Wireless earbuds
  • Smartwatches
  • Bluetooth speakers
  • Other low-power accessories

Before choosing a charger, check the connector on the cable you plan to use. A USB-C to USB-C cable requires a USB-C port on the charger, while a USB-A to USB-C cable requires a traditional rectangular USB-A port.

Customers replacing both parts can compare compatible charging cables alongside the charger.

Fast Chargers for Android Phones

Fast-charging support differs between phone manufacturers and models. Common standards include:

  • USB Power Delivery
  • Programmable Power Supply
  • Qualcomm Quick Charge
  • Samsung Super Fast Charging
  • Motorola TurboPower
  • OnePlus SUPERVOOC
  • Oppo VOOC
  • Proprietary Tecno and Infinix charging systems

A charger may be physically compatible with a phone without delivering its fastest supported speed. For example, Samsung devices that support Super Fast Charging may require a compatible USB-C Power Delivery charger with PPS.

Proprietary charging systems may also require both the manufacturer’s charger and a compatible high-current cable. Using an ordinary cable can reduce the available charging speed.

Browse available Samsung phones, OnePlus phones, Tecno-compatible budget smartphones and other phones before choosing a replacement adapter.

iPhone Chargers

Recent iPhones can be charged using a compatible USB-C power adapter and the appropriate cable.

The required cable depends on the iPhone model:

  • iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C
  • Earlier Lightning-equipped iPhones use a USB-C to Lightning or USB-A to Lightning cable

A 20W USB-C adapter is a common option for iPhone fast charging. Higher-output USB-C adapters can also be used when they support the required charging standard, although the iPhone will draw only the power it supports.

Apple charging cables are normally sold separately from Apple power adapters. Confirm what is included before ordering.

20W, 25W and 30W Phone Chargers

Chargers in the 20W to 30W range are suitable for many everyday smartphone users.

They are commonly used for:

  • iPhones
  • Samsung Galaxy phones
  • Google Pixel phones
  • Entry-level tablets
  • Power banks
  • Wireless earbuds
  • Smartwatches

These chargers are usually compact, portable and less expensive than high-output multi-port models. They are a practical choice when only one phone or accessory needs to be charged at a time.

Current examples include the Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter, Samsung 25W USB-C Power Adapter, Google 30W USB-C Charger and Oraimo PowerCube 20W charger kit.

35W and 45W Phone Chargers

A 35W or 45W charger provides additional capacity for compatible phones, tablets and lightweight USB-C devices.

These chargers may be useful for:

  • Samsung phones that support 45W charging
  • Tablets
  • Two-device charging
  • Travellers carrying fewer adapters
  • Users who charge a phone and accessory together

A dual-port charger divides its available output when two devices are connected. The full advertised wattage may therefore not be available from each port simultaneously.

Check the charger’s port-output table rather than assuming that every port delivers the maximum rating.

65W and Higher-Output Chargers

Chargers rated at 65W, 68W, 100W or more are designed for users who want to charge several devices or use one adapter for both mobile devices and compatible USB-C computers.

They may be suitable for:

  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • High-capacity power banks
  • Nintendo Switch and portable gaming devices
  • USB-C laptops
  • Multiple-device travel setups

Higher-output chargers are not automatically the best choice for every buyer. They cost more and may be larger than basic phone adapters.

Customers primarily charging one smartphone may get better value from a compatible 20W to 45W model. A 65W or 100W unit becomes more useful when it replaces several separate adapters.

For portable charging away from a wall socket, compare available power banks, including high-capacity power banks and laptop power banks.

GaN Phone Chargers

GaN stands for gallium nitride. GaN chargers use a different semiconductor material from many conventional silicon chargers, allowing manufacturers to produce smaller adapters with higher power output and improved efficiency.

The main benefits can include:

  • More power from a compact charger
  • Reduced charger size
  • Multiple USB-C ports
  • Lower heat generation under comparable loads
  • Better suitability for travel
  • Phone, tablet and laptop charging from one adapter

Not every compact charger is a GaN charger, and GaN does not guarantee compatibility with every fast-charging system. The supported charging protocols remain more important than the material used inside the charger.

Single-Port and Multi-Port Chargers

A single-port charger is generally the simplest option for charging one phone. It avoids uncertainty about how output is divided between ports and is often more affordable.

Multi-port chargers are useful for charging combinations such as:

  • Phone and smartwatch
  • Phone and wireless earbuds
  • Two smartphones
  • Tablet and phone
  • Laptop and phone

When several devices are connected, the charger redistributes its total available power. A charger advertised as 65W total may provide a lower output to each connected device.

Check whether the charger provides:

  • USB-C only
  • USB-A only
  • USB-C and USB-A
  • Independent fast charging from each port
  • Dynamic power distribution

Customers charging earbuds and other audio accessories can also browse wireless earbuds and noise-cancelling earbuds.

Phone Charger Plug Types in Kenya

Kenya generally uses the British-style Type G wall socket. However, imported chargers may be supplied with European, American or other regional plugs.

Before purchasing, confirm:

  • The physical plug supplied
  • Whether a plug adapter is required
  • Whether the charger accepts 100–240V input
  • Whether an adapter is included
  • Whether the plug is fixed, removable or foldable

A travel plug adapter changes the physical connection but does not necessarily convert voltage. Most modern phone chargers support a broad input-voltage range, but the exact input rating should still be checked on the charger.

For safer multi-device connections, consider using a suitable power extension or surge protector rather than stacking several loose plug adapters.

Phone Charger Safety

A charger is connected directly to mains electricity, so electrical safety matters more than choosing the highest wattage or lowest price.

Check for:

  • Overvoltage protection
  • Overcurrent protection
  • Short-circuit protection
  • Temperature monitoring
  • Stable power output
  • Secure plug construction
  • Undamaged casing
  • Correct device compatibility
  • Reputable brand and supplier

Stop using a charger if it produces unusual smells, visible sparks, excessive heat, cracking sounds or a loose connection.

Heat during fast charging is not always a fault, but the charger and cable should not become dangerously hot. A damaged or poorly rated cable can also cause unstable charging even when the adapter is working correctly.
