UPS

Choosing a UPS in Kenya

A UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, provides temporary battery power when electricity goes off. Depending on the type and capacity, a UPS can keep a Wi-Fi router online, protect a desktop computer from sudden shutdowns, support CCTV equipment or give office users enough time to save their work and shut equipment down safely.

UPS systems sold in Kenya range from compact mini UPS units designed for routers and fibre equipment to larger line-interactive UPS systems for computers, CCTV systems, network equipment and office electronics.

If your main concern is keeping your internet connection running during a blackout, a mini UPS for a router may be more practical than a full-size AC UPS. For desktop computers and equipment that uses ordinary mains plugs, a conventional UPS is usually the better choice.

You can also browse other Power & Electrical products or compare compatible networking equipment.

When comparing UPS systems in Kenya, check:

  • UPS type
  • Battery capacity
  • Rated power output
  • VA and watt rating for conventional UPS systems
  • Output voltage
  • Supported DC voltages for mini UPS units
  • Number and type of output ports
  • PoE support where required
  • Router or ONU compatibility
  • Battery chemistry
  • Automatic switchover
  • Expected runtime at your actual load
  • Recharge time
  • Overload protection
  • Automatic voltage regulation where available
  • Product condition
  • Warranty

The most important specification is not simply battery capacity. The UPS must also provide the correct voltage, connector and sufficient power for the equipment you intend to run.

Mini UPS for Routers and Fibre Internet

A mini UPS is a compact battery backup designed mainly for low-voltage electronics such as:

  • Wi-Fi routers
  • Fibre ONTs and ONUs
  • Modems
  • Access points
  • Small network switches
  • IP cameras
  • Selected CCTV equipment
  • Other compatible DC-powered electronics

Many router mini UPS models provide several DC outputs, commonly including combinations of 5V, 9V and 12V. More advanced models may also offer 15V or 24V output, USB charging or Power over Ethernet.

Do not choose a mini UPS based only on its battery capacity.

Before connecting one to a router or fibre terminal, check the voltage printed on the original device power adapter. A router designed for 12V should normally be connected to the appropriate 12V UPS output rather than an arbitrary port.

You should also check the required connector size and current rating.

Customers replacing or upgrading their networking equipment can compare Wi-Fi routers, home routers and Gigabit routers.

How Long Can a Mini UPS Run a Router?

Runtime depends on the amount of energy stored in the battery and the actual power consumption of the connected equipment.

Two mini UPS units with similar advertised mAh capacities may not necessarily provide identical runtime. Battery voltage, conversion losses, connected load and whether one or several devices are powered at the same time all affect the result.

For example, running only a low-power router will normally consume less energy than powering both a router and fibre ONT from the same UPS.

For more useful comparisons, check the battery capacity in watt-hours when the manufacturer provides it, together with the power consumption of the connected equipment.

Advertised runtime should therefore be treated as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Mini UPS vs Standard UPS

Mini UPS and conventional UPS systems solve different problems.

A mini UPS is generally the better option when you need compact DC backup for a router, modem, ONT or similar networking device. It is small, normally silent and can switch to battery power without requiring the router to use a normal AC wall plug.

A standard UPS is designed for equipment that normally plugs into a mains socket. These units are commonly used with:

  • Desktop computers
  • Monitors
  • CCTV recorders
  • Network switches
  • Point-of-sale systems
  • Small servers
  • Office workstations
  • Other compatible electronics

Standard UPS capacity is commonly stated in both volt-amperes (VA) and watts.

The watt figure is particularly important because the combined load of connected equipment should remain below the UPS’s rated output.

TechStore Kenya also carries conventional UPS systems alongside compact router backup units, allowing you to choose the type that matches the equipment you need to keep running.

UPS for Home Internet

For many homes, a blackout does not immediately disconnect the fibre connection. The router and fibre terminal simply lose local power.

A compatible mini UPS can keep these devices powered until mains electricity returns or until the battery is depleted.

Before buying one, check how many devices must remain powered.

A fibre installation may include both:

  1. An ONT or ONU supplied by the internet provider
  2. A separate Wi-Fi router

If both need backup power, choose a UPS with suitable outputs and enough capacity for the combined load.

If you are also upgrading your network, browse Wi-Fi routers and other networking products.

UPS for CCTV and Security Equipment

UPS systems can also provide short-term backup for CCTV equipment.

The correct size depends on what must remain operational. A small installation may need to power only a recorder and network device, while a larger system may include a recorder, PoE switch, cameras, monitor and other equipment.

Add the power requirements of the equipment before choosing a UPS.

A mini UPS may work with specific low-voltage cameras, routers or network equipment, but it should not automatically be assumed to replace a conventional UPS for an entire CCTV installation.

UPS for Computers and Offices

For desktop computers, workstations and office equipment, look at the UPS’s watt rating rather than relying on the VA figure alone.

The connected load may include:

  • Desktop computer
  • Monitor
  • Router
  • Network switch
  • External storage
  • Point-of-sale terminal

A higher-capacity UPS can support a larger load, but runtime still depends on how much power the equipment is drawing.

For computers, a UPS is particularly useful for avoiding immediate shutdown during short power interruptions and allowing users to save open work.

Line-interactive models may also provide automatic voltage regulation, depending on the exact UPS.

For additional electrical protection, compare surge protectors and power extensions.

These prices show why capacity alone should not determine your choice. Higher-priced models may offer greater output power, different battery technology, additional voltage options or support for equipment that a basic router UPS cannot run.

Standard UPS Prices in Kenya

Conventional UPS systems cover a much wider power range than mini UPS units.

Entry-level 650VA and 850VA systems are commonly intended for smaller desktop or networking loads, while 1000VA, 1200VA, 1500VA and 2000VA units can support progressively larger compatible loads.

The required size depends on the wattage of the equipment rather than the number of devices alone.

For example, a desktop computer and monitor may place a much greater load on a UPS than a router and network switch.

UPS, Power Banks and Surge Protectors Are Different

A UPS should not be confused with a power bank or surge protector.

A power bank mainly stores energy for charging USB-powered devices. Selected high-output models can also charge compatible laptops, but they do not necessarily provide the automatic switchover, DC router outputs or AC backup functions of a UPS.

A surge protector is designed to help protect connected electronics from short-duration electrical surges. It does not provide meaningful battery backup during a blackout.

Some users may need both surge protection and battery backup, depending on their equipment and power conditions.

What to Check Before Buying a UPS

Before ordering, identify the equipment you want to keep running and check its electrical requirements.

For a router mini UPS, confirm:

  • Router or ONT voltage
  • Connector size
  • Required current
  • Number of devices
  • Required output ports
  • PoE requirements
  • Battery capacity
  • Maximum output power

For a conventional UPS, confirm:

  • Total equipment wattage
  • UPS watt rating
  • UPS VA rating
  • Number of required sockets
  • Input and output socket type
  • AVR availability
  • Battery configuration
  • Approximate runtime at the intended load

Do not connect equipment that exceeds the UPS’s stated power capacity.
